<p>Congress President Rahul Gandhi won by a large margin of 4,31,770 votes in Wayanad in Kerala. He is, however, trailing and headed for a loss in his bastion of Amethi to Union Minister Smriti Irani.</p>.<p>In Wayanad, Rahul got 7,06,367 votes and runner up CPI's P P Suneer secured 2,74,597 votes.</p>.<p>Rahul's candidature in Wayanad allowed the Congress and its allies to capture a record number of 19 out of 20 seats in Kerala. The party has already had an upper hand over the CPM-led LDF on the Sabarimala issue. With Rahul's entry, the Congress party was able to resolve issues with party factions and gave the alliance the upper hand.</p>.<p>In 2014, Rahul won Amethi by a margin of 1,07,903 votes while in 2009 he had a margin of 3,70,198 votes, which was his highest margin. In his debut in 2004, Rahul beat his opponents by a margin of 2,90,853.</p>.<p>In the first election after the formation of the contituency, Congress leader M I Shanawas won in Wayanad by a lead of 1,53,439 votes. This margin was reduced to 20,870 in 2014.</p>
