Members of Sahakara Bharati will stage a protest in front of Mangaluru DC’s office on August 30, demanding the state government to withdraw its decision of recovering farmer loans from their saving accounts.

The organisation’s State Sanghatana Pramukh S R Satishchandra in Mangaluru on Tuesday said that the Sahakara Bharati condemns the government’s move of recovering the loan amount from the farmers’ savings deposited in the banks.

“The government in its order dated August 14, has ordered for the waiving off the loans availed by farmers from cooperative societies and banks, towards short term crop loans, up to Rs one lakh. But, it has been mentioned in the order that the outstanding amount of the loan, as of July 10, should be recovered from their deposits at DCC or commercial banks.”

Satishchandra further said that the government does not have any right to grab the savings of farmers in the name of loan waiver. The amount deposited by farmers in the banks are meant for the education of their children, marriage, house maintenance and medical needs.

He urged the state government to completely waive off the loans of farmers in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and other districts who have been affected by floods. The loans availed by farmers from commercial banks also should be waived off, as announced in the state budget, he added.

Sahakara Bharati Pranta Saha Sanghatana Pramukh Harish Acharya, Pranta Mahila Sanghatana Pramukh Sumana Sharan, district unit president Krishna Prasad Madthila and Mangaluru unit President Chittaranjan Bolar were present.
