Govt to woo foreigners with rural tourism

Last Updated 09 November 2012, 18:57 IST

The government plans to promote rural tourism and develop lesser-known potential destinations into tourist spots to increase foreign tourist arrivals in the country.

“They (foreigners) want to come here and see true India. They want to visit Rural India. That’s why we want to promote rural tourism,” newly appointed Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi said here on Friday after he returned from London, participating at the World Tourism Mart (WTM), an annual international tourism event.

The Ministry also plans to promote lesser-known destinations as tourist spots, he said, adding that he launched the “Go Beyond” campaign at WTM in London for this. The new campaign will focus on promoting lesser- known destinations to the domestic tourists and also the world, he added.

The Ministry also launched another new international campaign—”Find what you seek”—in London to attract foreign tourists to India. This is the second part of Incredible India Campaign which government had been running so far.

“With the new campaign we have tried to take the Incredible India campaign to the next level with shifting focus from products to consumers. This time our focus is consumers, not products,” Chiranjeevi said.
