Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to present its annual budget for 2025-26 in the third week of March, with a total outlay of up to Rs 20,000 crore.
.
This marks a record increase of 40 per cent compared to the previous year.
.
The rise in the budget is primarily due to the state government’s allocation of Rs 7,000 crore for Bengaluru, which is Rs 4,000 crore more than last year’s allocation.
.
Officials stated that the final date for the budget presentation will be determined after consulting Bengaluru MLAs, given the absence of an elected council.
.
“A meeting will take place by the end of this week, and the budget will be presented next week,” said a senior BBMP official.
.'Bengaluru was serene haven...': Harsh Goenka's post on IITians and traffic sparks debate online.
In the 2024-25 budget, the BBMP allocated Rs 13,114 crore, with the bulk of its revenue coming from property tax. In the upcoming fiscal year, the civic body will rely more on the state government's grant while also expecting an increase in property tax collections.
.
Apart from the Rs 7,000 crore guarantee from the state government, the BBMP anticipates generating around Rs 5,656 crore from property taxes. The premium floor area ratio (FAR), recently approved by the state government, is expected to contribute Rs 1,000 crore, sources said.
.
Also, the BBMP expects to raise another Rs 750 crore through its advertisement policy, which may be implemented in the new fiscal year.
.
Officials added that they have explored innovative revenue-raising measures without increasing property taxes. These include boosting income from rental and lease properties, as well as increasing fees for approvals issued by the Town Planning Department. “There is a plan to simplify building plan approvals,” an official said.
.
Typically, a sizeable portion of the BBMP’s revenue is allocated to the maintenance of parks, ward roads, streetlights, and similar services. For larger infrastructure projects, the civic body relies on budgetary allocations from the state government, which has already announced initiatives such as tunnel roads, new roads along the buffer zones of rajakaluves, and flyovers.
