BBMP snubbed this woman’s painstaking effort to fix streetlights along ORR

Last Updated 10 June 2018, 16:20 IST

When Anindita Nayak noticed the fused and flickering streetlights around Kaikondrahalli, she did not walk past them in apathy.

She made a careful note of the malfunctioning lights in a mapping application and sent it to the BBMP in the hope that it would be addressed immediately. But the Palike gave her the cold-shoulder treatment.

Using the GoMap! app, Anindita found that a meager 38% of the 660 streetlights along the Outer Ring Road between the Ibblur junction and Kadubeesanahalli were functional. She did this after personally noting down the malfunctioning streetlights in the stretch each night after office hours.

Anindita used to struggle to pass through the dark stretches of roads at night. She brought the issue to the BBMP's attention by making a complaint on their website, but the civic body closed the case without resolving it.

"The officials said they are occupied with the election duty and would need more time to fix it," she said.

The Fix My Street app, launched to solve basic civic issues, received 3,201 electrical issues till March. The BBMP had solved 2,411 issues, while 790 remain unchecked.
