Bengaluru to see more summer showers this week: IMD

Bengaluru: With Bengaluru moving towards peak summer, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that intermittent pre-monsoon showers accompanied by gusty winds and lightning will continue this week.

While the maximum and minimum temperatures in Bengaluru are likely to range between 34°C and 23°C over the next two days, the city is expected to experience moderate thundershowers with gusty winds from Tuesday to Friday, according to the IMD.

N Puviarasan, Head of the Bengaluru Met Centre, said that unlike last year, Karnataka is witnessing convectional rainfall this year — precipitation caused by the rising of warm, moist air and its subsequent cooling, leading to condensation and cloud formation.
“Due to this phenomenon, Bengaluru is seeing more summer rains this year compared to last year, which was hotter and had longer dry spells,” he added.

He said Bengaluru is likely to witness light to moderate thundershowers on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

However, the IMD has noted that due to above-normal temperatures in north interior Karnataka, there may be minor damage to banana and papaya trees, with a risk of strong winds damaging plantation, horticulture, and standing crops. The IMD has also cautioned about partial damage to vulnerable structures due to strong winds in some parts of Karnataka.

Breaking of tree branches and uprooting of large avenue trees are likely impacts of strong winds in some areas, according to the IMD.

Follow these safety measures

The IMD has advised people to monitor weather updates for worsening conditions and to be ready to move to safer places if necessary. Stay indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid travel if possible. Take safe shelter; do not seek shelter under trees. Avoid lying on concrete floors and leaning against concrete walls. Unplug electrical and electronic appliances. Exit water bodies immediately.
