<p>Bengaluru: The Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) has decided to construct a 2.5-km tunnel road within the premises of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to provide an alternative access which will help the city’s eastern parts. The project, roughly estimated to cost about Rs 200 crore, is likely to be ready in three years. </p><p>Hari Marar, chief executive officer (CEO) of BIAL, said the Bengaluru airport is being redefined in "more ways than we imagine". “Metro work is progressing at a brisk pace. It is likely to be completed and operationalised by mid-2026. There is also a plan to bring suburban rail but it will take slightly longer time. The tunnel road passes underneath an active apron and connects the terminal. The project will also cut down the traffic coming to the airport from Hebbal by 30 per cent. “Hebbal will be decongested,” he said. </p><p>The four-lane tunnel road, first proposed in 2016, will join the state highway 104 which is currently being widened to four lanes by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation (KRDCL). It will also help the motorists using the newly-constructed Satellite Town Ring Road.</p><p>During the interview with Goyal, Hari Marar, also said that India is the third largest aviation market in the world. "We are infusing Rs 16,500 crore for expanding the next phase of the Bengaluru airport. This includes eastern tunnel road, construction of two metro stations, a bridge across the main road for the aircrafts to cross over, taxi-way extension, etc. Building the second half of the Terminal 2 is also a part of this proposal. The two terminals will be capable of handling 80 million passengers," he said. </p>
