Last Updated 15 October 2018, 18:12 IST

A section officer at the Distance Education Directorate of Bangalore University (BU), who appeared for the MA Sociology exam, was caught red-handed while copying answers from a book.

Narasu Bai had appeared for the examination conducted by her department. She had taken up MA (Sociology) through correspondence. The squad seized a textbook during the raid from her in the examination hall.

“We got to know about the malpractice of the official from fellow examinees. She told the fellow examinees and the invigilators to keep quiet. She also threatened them with dire consequences by using her authority," said Mylarappa, director (in-charge), distance education, Bangalore University.

He said some students approached the higher authorities of BU, who visited the exam hall and seized the sociology textbook and a few manuscripts from her. "The examinees claimed that she had written the previous two examinations too in the same way,” he said.

Based on the allegations of fellow examinees, the BU officials are also conducting an inquiry into the previous two examinations.

Narasu Bai was eyeing a promotion by clearing her post-graduate degree course. She has three more years left for retirement. BU Registrar (evaluation), who was also part of the squad that caught her, immediately debarred her from appearing for the remaining exams and submitted the report to higher authorities for further action.

“As a primary action, she has been debarred. There will be a departmental inquiry against her. It will also be discussed at the upcoming syndicate meeting. The report will be submitted to the governor, where the decision about her future will be taken,” Venugopal K R, BU vice-chancellor told DH.
