Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has collaborated with Pelican Kenterra and Wipro Foundation to implement soil-less, compost-based gardens in metro medians.
.
This initiative aims to reduce soil mining from fertile farmlands and mountains while providing a sustainable solution for compost forward linkage. It also seeks to curb the indiscriminate dumping of construction debris into medians.
.
The project involves collecting reject compost and garden waste from residential communities and commercial establishments.
.Man attempts suicide by jumping Delhi metro station railing, seen dangling from building for 1 hour.
As part of the project, Kenterra near the Manjunath Nagar metro station installed a 100-metre trial stretch. More than 20 metric tonnes of compost were used to fill the medians between five pillars. Kenterra then transformed the compost into soil-less gardening material using proprietary technology and planted ornamental plants.
.
Following the trial’s success, the BMRCL has allotted an additional five kilometres of metro medians between HSR Layout and Bellandur for compost gardening.
.
For the first 12 medians handed over, Pelican Kenterra collected 600 cubic metres of natural compost and garden waste from the Wipro Forest area in Sarjapur.
.
A BMRCL spokesperson said, “We never imagined that our medians could serve as a solution for waste management in the city. The BMRCL is committed to supporting such green initiatives, as the core goal of the metro rail is to promote efficient public transport, reduce private vehicle use, and ultimately lower emissions.”
