<p>A robbery attempt at an HDFC Bank ATM on Mirza Road under Anekal police limits was foiled by an alert security guard and policemen in the early hours of Thursday.<br /><br />According to police, the security guard of HDFC Bank ATM saw three men roaming around in a bike and went out to check.<br /><br /> As he walked some distance from the ATM, the miscreants came back and noticed that no one was in the kiosk. They went inside and tried to break the machine.<br /><br />The guard, who was noticing this from a distance, alerted the police. When the miscreants noticed the police approaching, they sped off. <br /><br /> The police gave a chase till Jigani but in vain as the suspects slipped into darkness.<br />A senior police officer said the robbers thought the ATM was unguarded but did not notice the guard standing at a distance. </p>.<p>The ATM suffered some minor damages as the robbers attempted to break it open. The police are examining the CCTV footage.<br /><br />PSI suspended<br /><br />A police sub-inspector was suspended on Wednesday for letting off a thief after allegedly taking money from his associates.<br /><br />According to police, Sanjay Kumar, 24, a native of Bihar, was caught by passengers of Bangalore-Mysore passenger train, while he was trying to steal valuables from the passengers’ luggage. <br /><br />After preliminary investigation, the Channapatna police handed him over to the City railway police for investigation.<br /><br />Police said Jayaramaiah took custody of the suspect but allowed him to contact one of his accomplices, Choudhary from Solapur. <br /><br />After a couple of days, Choudhary came down to the City and offered Jayaramaiah money for his release. <br /><br />Jayaramaiah accepted the money and sent the constable on duty to the office of Superintendent of Police on the pretext of giving some official documents, before letting off the suspect. <br /><br />On his return, the constable found the suspect missing from the cell. <br /><br />He alerted the senior police officers who found that the suspect was let off by the sub-inspector. <br /><br />A senior police officer said that a probe revealed that the sub-inspector had received bribe for releasing Kumar.</p>
