'Won't ask for extra time': D K Shivakumar on holding civic polls in Bengaluru as per Supreme Court order

'It is our duty to conduct the elections... We are confident that we will do well in all the five corporations'

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday said elections to corporations in the the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) area would be held within the deadline set by the Supreme Court, stressing that the government would not seek additional time. 

Shivakumar told reporters that the government would make the necessary recommendations to the State Election Commission as per the court order. 

"It is our duty to conduct the elections. We are preparing new leaders by empowering (Congress) party workers. We are confident that we will do well in all the five corporations," he said. 

The government will also conduct zilla and taluk panchayat elections, he added.

Answering a question on complaints related to the reservation of wards, the Bengaluru Development Minister said some people had submitted technical objections and that the government had formed a committee to look into it. 

"There is a complaint that reservation for women is not adequate. The committee will look into it," he said. 

Bengaluru's civic body elections were last held in 2015.

The Supreme Court has asked the government to conduct the elections before June 30.
