Caste abuse tantamount to violation of Constitution: Judge

Principal District and Sessions Court Judge R K G M M Mahaswamiji has said that abusing and insulting people by caste tantamount to violating the Constitution.

Speaking at a seminar on eradication of untouchability here on Thursday, the judge said that with the frequent incidents of atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, people should be aware of pertinent laws. The district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Social Welfare and District Legal Services Authority had jointly organised the seminar at Ambedkar Bhavan in the town.

He said that all the people in society should be treated with equal respect.

Zilla Panchayat President B A Harish said that one should read the biography of Dr B R Ambedkar to know more about the travails of untouchability.

He called upon the people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to seize the opportunities for join the mainstream of society.

Zilla Panchayat  vice president Lokeshwari Gopal said that education was a powerful tool to eradicate untouchabilityi.

Member secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Mohan Prabhu opined that a change in marriage system may help in fighting casteism in society.

Advocate M A Niranjan delivered a talk on ‘SC and ST Atrocity (Prevention) 
Act.’ Deputy Superintendent of Police, Virajpet sub-division Nagappa and advocate B K Sridhar were present on the occasion.
