The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has asked the Department of Medical Education to verify whether four students who secured admission to medical courses under the ‘Physically Handicapped’ quota last year are actually deaf, as they claim to be.
.
The KEA’s plea to the Medical Education Department follows a complaint that the agency received from the National Pre-University Students, Parents and Teachers Association, which expressed suspicions over the claims made by the four students.
.
In its complaint, the association pointed out that one student had declared no disability till class 11. Records of the student at his school and college too contain no mention of any disability. Meanwhile, the names of two other students who secured admission, were not mentioned in the official medical verification list, but appeared only in the final list, wrote the association.
.
The association also enclosed a copy of the last student’s class 11 admission form, wherein the student has made it clear that there is no physical disability. “However, the claim of physical disability was made by the candidate only in the NEET 2024 application,” said the association.
.To claim NRI ward quota, fee must be directly paid to KEA, says circular.
The KEA has relayed the complaint to the Department of Medical Education and called on the latter to subject the four students to a medical examination to ascertain whether they are indeed disabled. “We have sought help from the medical board at the Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute to inquire into this complaint. We are waiting for the medical board’s report,” said a senior official at the Department of Medical Education.
.
The All-India ranks of the four students who secured seats under the ‘Physical Disability’ quota are in the five lakh to 12 lakh range.
.
A senior official at the KEA said that the primary list of ‘Physically Handicapped’ candidates was published only after receipt of medical certificates from qualified doctors. “We received no objections from anyone against any of the students when the names of these students were made public. Now that we have received a complaint, we have sought a report from the Medical Education Department,” the official
added.
