A 27-year-old Chimpanzee, Guru, died at Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens on Monday night.

This Chimpanzee was brought to Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens from Chennai Zoo in 2013 under an animal exchange programme.

Zoo Executive Director Ajith Kulkarni said the Chimpanzee was suffering from weakness from Sunday. A veterinary doctor had attended to it. But it failed to respond to the treatment and died on Monday night. The viscera of the animal has been sent to a forensic laboratory for test. It confirmed that the death was due to a respiratory problem, he added.

According to an expert, the lifespan of Chimpanzees is 46 years and they may survive up to 58 years under captivity as they are provided nutritious food and timely medical treatment.
