<p class="bodytext">Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader inaugurated the fifth Indira canteen at Pumpwell in Mangaluru on Tuesday.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The canteen is built at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. ‘Indira Canteen’ is aimed at serving food to the people at subsidised rates.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Speaking on the occasion, he said that Indira Canteen is useful for rickshaw drivers, daily wage labourers and students to have breakfast, lunch and dinner at an affordable rate.</p>.<p class="bodytext">He said the poor cannot afford to have food that costs more than Rs 50 in a hotel. The Indira canteen helps them to overcome hunger. Seventy-eight more Indira canteens will be completed under the guidance of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in the state.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Indira Canteens have already been opened at State Bank, Kavoor, Urwa Store and Suratkal. Indira Canteens will come up at Ullal, BC Road, Beltangady, Sullia and Puttur as well.</p>.<p class="bodytext">MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that the MCC has earmarked Rs 2.25 crore for the maintenance of Indira canteens.</p>
