Janapada Jathre stages a comeback

Taking pride in parochial roots of his regional party and playing the regional card Kumaraswamy on Friday vowed to revive the weekend 'Janapada Jathre'— a popular folk art festival which he started way back in 2006.

Alongside his announcement of a variety of programmes to farmers, Kumaraswamy also focussed on the rich folklore preserved by farming communities in these villages since ages. Previously during the Dasara celebrations time, Kumaraswamy had promised to provide financial assistance to preserve the vanishing art forms.

True to his words, the chief minister said that with a view to encourage folk artistes and folk arts, "Janapada Jathre" will be re-launched. "A grant of Rs 2 cr will be provided to organise Janapada Jathre in all districts including Bengaluru," he said.

Providing weekend entertainment and an opportunity for the talented folklore from various parts of the state, including Goravana Kunita, Veeragase, Dollu Kunita, Pata dance, Thamate and Jaggalige drums, the previous coalition government led by Kumaraswamy had come up with the Janapada Jathre concept on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha. Later, the shows were held at Lalbagh botanical gardens attracting hundreds of onlookers. The weekend folklore festival had become a travel attraction for foreign visitors to the city.
