<p>Chikkaballapur: The Karnataka State Cabinet, which met on Wednesday at Nandi Hills, approved several significant decisions, including the renaming of a district, a university and a taluk, besides giving a nod to infrastructure projects and welfare programmes.</p><p>While the Bengaluru City University will now be called Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University, Bengaluru Rural District will be renamed as Bengaluru North and Bagepalli will now officially be known as Bhagyanagar.</p><p><strong>Cabinet sub-committee</strong></p><p>A Cabinet Sub-Committee has been formed under the leadership of Minister H K Patil to review ongoing illegal mining activities in the state and suggest necessary corrective measures. The committee has been instructed to submit its report within a month.</p><p>Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, addressing the media after the meeting, stated that the Cabinet approved projects worth Rs 3,400 crore, with Rs 2,525 crore allocated to 31 projects in districts under the Bengaluru division.</p><p><strong>Yettinahole project</strong></p><p>He said that the revised cost of the Yettinahole project stands at Rs 23,251 crore, of which Rs 17,147 crore has already been spent. An additional Rs 6,103 crore is required to complete the remaining work, including land acquisition. So, the Cabinet has approved Rs 1,900 crore as additional funding.</p><p>In the first phase, 14 tmcft of water will be supplied for drinking purposes. Later, eight tmcft will be directed to local tanks and lakes, the CM informed.</p><p><strong>Welfare initiatives</strong></p><p>The CM said that two hostels will be set up in Bengaluru at a cost of Rs 10 crore to support candidates from the backward communities preparing for UPSC exams.</p><p>Labour Welfare Residential Schools will be established in every district for the children of registered workers under the Labour Welfare Board.</p><p>Community Health Centres (CHCs) will be set up in all newly created taluks, ensuring improved healthcare access across rural Karnataka.</p><p><strong>ULBs to be upgraded</strong></p><p>The Cabinet has approved the upgrade of three urban local bodies (ULB): Bailhongal Town Municipal Council (Belagavi district) and Harapanahalli Town Municipal Council (Vijayanagara district) will be upgraded to City Municipal Councils (CMC). Additionally, Rs 1,154 crore has been earmarked for irrigation projects.</p><p><strong>Gantlamallamma Dam</strong></p><p>The long-pending demand of the people from Pathapalya and Chelur regions in Bagepalli taluk has finally been fulfilled, with the Cabinet approving the construction of the Gantlamallamma Dam. An amount of Rs 180 crore has been sanctioned for the project.</p><p>The dam is to be constructed near Pathakote village, located along the Pathapalya–Bagepalli route. In the Gantlamallamma valley, a large amount of water flows wastefully through the area. The valley is flanked by two hills, from which water flows down and collects. Local MLA S N Subbareddy had proposed that a dam be built here to store water and supply it as drinking water to Pathapalya.
