<p>Bengaluru: Chief Minister <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/siddaramaiah">Siddaramaiah</a> on Wednesday directed officials in the Finance Department to approve pending proposals for recruitment of faculty members to state-run universities and colleges at the earliest. The CM, participating in a meeting to review the Department of Higher Education, reportedly expressed disappointment over the large number of vacancies in higher education department.</p>.<p>Calling on the officials not to drag their feet on filling these vacancies, Siddaramaiah pointed out that students from SC/ST and backward communities accounted for a bulk of the admissions at government universities, emphasising the need to ensure they received quality education.</p>.<p>“We have been asked to submit a detailed presentation to the Finance Department about the number of vacancies in a day or two,” said a senior official in the Higher Education Department, who attended the meeting.</p>.Karnataka CM reaffirms commitment to police housing scheme .<p>The CM is learnt to have directed the Finance Department to draft a comprehensive plan to offer financial assistance to select varsities such as the Karnataka Janapada University, the Hampi Kannada University, which do not have a viable source of income. </p>.<p>“Given that these varsities do not have affiliated colleges, it’s the government’s responsibility to support them financially,” the official added.</p>.<p>Siddaramaiah also called on officials to formulate plans to equip students enrolled in arts programmes with skills to improve their employment prospects.</p>.<p>Data sourced from the Higher Education Department indicates that 10 of the 32 government universities have no permanent teachers. Of the 4,709 sanctioned teaching positions across the 32 varsities, there are only 1,986 teachers.</p>.<p>Karnataka University has the highest number of vacant faculty positions – 414 – followed by University of Mysore (379), Bangalore University (234), Gulbarga University (170), Bengaluru City University (150), while 141 faculty posts are lying vacant at Mangalore University. </p>
