According to the new norms, the eligibility percentage in second year pre-university has been increased to 45 per cent from 40 per cent for SC, ST and OBC candidates and to 50 per cent for general category students, up from the earlier of the 45 per cent marks. As many as 17,000 students have become ineligible to pursue engineering course in the State as a result of revised norms, the minister said.

Though the government has written to the HRD Minister thrice in this regard, he has not responded. “The government in neighbouring Tamil Nadu has already declared that it will follow the old criteria, while the Gujarat government has moved court on the issue. Our government has been making sincere attempts to protect the interest of students,” he stated.
