Transport board on cards to help unorganised workers: Santosh Lad

Shivamogga: The government is preparing to establish a transport board in Karnataka to support unorganised workers active in the vehicle industry, such as auto, lorry, and rental car drivers and cleaners, according to Labour Minister Santosh Lad.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, he stated, "In the future, those purchasing new bikes and cars will have to pay Rs 500 and Rs 1000 respectively as cess to the proposed transport board."

"The cess will also be collected from vehicle manufacturing companies. This fund will provide social security to the workers' families, including support for health and education. More than 3 million workers in the state will benefit from this."

Gig Economy Bill

He mentioned that online transaction companies will collect cess from customers to provide social security to delivery personnel working for companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Flipkart, and Amazon, and a Gig Economy Bill is being formulated for this purpose.

"I have instructed department officials to revoke the licenses of companies and factories that do not provide minimum wage, gratuity, and PF benefits to contract-based workers," he added.
