<p>The National Human Rights Commission received reports of compliance of its recommendations in 44 cases by different public authorities at the Centre and states in April 2016. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Apart from initiating departmental and criminal proceedings against the guilty public servants, they paid Rs 1.17 crore as relief to the victims of human rights violations or their next of kin, and also submitted a proof of payment as directed by the commission.<br /><br />Out of these 44 cases, a maximum 28 cases pertain to the violation of right to life in the actions or inactions of public authorities. Ten cases were of death in prison, with a maximum four in Uttar Pradesh, followed by two in Andhra Pradesh and one each in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab. <br /><br /> Eight cases were of death in police custody, with three in Telangana followed by two in Uttar Pradesh and one each in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Meghalaya. Seven cases were of death in police encounter, with five in Assam followed by three in Uttar Pradesh. Two cases were of death in police firing in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. One case was of an encounter by Assam Rifles in Manipur.
