<p>Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday night placed under suspension D Kannan, hours after he was shunted out as Chengalpattu district Superintendent of Police for allegedly stopping a woman IPS officer on her way to Chennai to complain against a DGP-rank officer for sexually harassing her.</p>.<p>In a notification, the ECI said a case has been registered against Kannan, who was Chengalpattu district SP when the incident took place on February 22, under sections 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint ) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC and section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998.</p>.<p>“Considering the gravity of the case and report of the Home Department of Tamil Nadu, the Commission has directed that Shri. D. Kannan be placed under suspension immediately and disciplinary proceedings initiated against him,” the ECI said in its order addressed to the Chief Secretary.</p>.<p>Kannan is accused of stopping a woman IPS officer at the Chengalpattu toll gate outside Chennai on February 22 when she was on her way to file a complaint against Special DGP (Law and Order), whose name is being withheld due to a court case, for sexually harassing her.</p>.<p>It is alleged that Kannan not just stopped the woman officer's car, but also forced her to speak to the accused police officer over the phone.</p>.<p>The woman officer, in her complaint to police, has accused the Special DGP of sexually harassing her while they were travelling in the same car during Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami's visit to central districts.</p>.<p>The Special DGP was removed from his post and placed under compulsory wait at the DGP's office after the complaint was filed.</p>.<p>Subsequently, the CB-CID wing of Tamil Nadu Police registered a case against the accused officer and Kannan.</p>
