In an effort to retrace its past glory, the historic Somnath temple has installed gold-plated doors to the central Garbagriha or sanctum sanctorum.
A statement from the temple’s governing body Shri Somnath Trust –which has former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel as its chairman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP veteran LK Advani and party president Amit Shah as trustees— said the Garbagriha, ornaments and the walls have now been covered in gold.
The temple transformed the doors and some utensils into gold after receiving 100 kilograms of the yellow metal from a Mumbai-based family.
With the remaining gold, the Trust wants to mould Shikhar-Dhvaj dand, Damru-Trishul, some portion of the wall, the face of Lord Shiva and some ornaments into gold in the second and third phase.
