After a year of faring through the pandemic, Bengaluru-based progressive & psychedelic rock band Dark Light recently performed for a live audience. The gig was a tribute to one of their heaviest influences: Pink Floyd.

The band has been in the scene since 2013 and is known for its ethereal and ambient soundscapes, detailed-elaborate instrumentation and evocative vocals.

The quartet comprises Jose Xavier (lyrics/vocals), Mohammed Uvais (guitars/bass), Anand Pilakkat (keyboards/Sampling), & Subir Telang (drums).

The band puts an emphasis on building narratives and storytelling both through their words and music, with intricate instrumental sections seamlessly blending with the
vocals.

Other than Pink Floyd, the band derives its influence from class acts such as Guns ‘n’ Roses, U2, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, etc.

In a candid interview with Metrolife, vocalist Jose Xavier spoke about their upcoming gigs and their debut album, ‘In Space and Time’.

How did you come together as a band?

We met through mutual friends and acquaintances, and some of us have worked together on other musical projects before.

Which genre defines your music the best?

We would describe our music as psychedelic/ progressive rock, but we are not bound by any genre stylistically. We believe in creating music that tells a story, but importantly, music that moves the listener.

What inspires you to make music?

We are inspired by life in general and the music we love. Also all the bands and artists we look up to continue to inspire us to create more original content.

Were there any roadblocks while making and releasing an album amidst the pandemic?

We had composed the album before the pandemic struck, but it was a difficult decision to release the album during an uncertain time. But we are glad that we made our contribution when people needed it the most.

What does your latest album talk about?

‘In Space and Time’ deals with various themes such as love, heartbreak and spirituality.
