Kerala may soon become 'Keralam'

The demand was made by CPM legislator Babu Pallasery who pointed out that the names of several places in the state and outside had already been changed to their original and the state’s name should also follow suit.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, who replied to the submission, said there had been demands from many quarters in this regard.

However, a decision on the matter had to be based on a consensus after discussions with experts.

He pointed out that a committee headed by the revenue minister already existed to examine the name-changing of places to conform with the way they were spelt or pronounced in Malayalam.
