Raj urban municipal polls: Cong wins 23 out of 49 seats

Congress on Tuesday won 23 out of 49 seats in the urban civic bodies in Rajasthan. Meanwhile, BJP secured a win in six urban civic bodies and others in 20 seats.

The voting to elect nearly 2,105 councillors was held on Saturday in which nearly 72% voters exercised their franchise. Ajmer district’s Nasirabad municipality recorded the maximum turnout of 91.67% while the overall voter turnout was 71.53%. The state election commission said that Udaipur Municipal Corporation recorded the lowest voter turnout of 53%.

The election for chairman and deputy chairman of urban local bodies will be held on November 26 and 27 respectively. The counting of votes began amid tight security. A total of 7,942 candidates are in the fray for election to 49 civic bodies. BJP had nominated 1,896 candidates comprising 1,166 men and 730 women. While Congress has 778 female candidates, the BSP has nominated 33 women.

Rajasthan Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot congratulated all the elected councillors. "This is the win of everyone who trusts the Congress party," Pilot said.
