Repeat exams from 2019 for ICSE, ISC students who fail

Last Updated 05 December 2018, 17:34 IST

Class X and XII students of CISCE schools, who are gearing up for their 2019 board examination, will get another chance to pass in case they fail.

The Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) on Wednesday announced it's decision to conduct compartmental examinations for both Classes X and XII from 2019.

There was no such provision until now for the students failing to clear the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) examination (Class X board) and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examination (Class XII board).

Such candidates had to appear afresh in the board examinations the next year.

“Compartmental examination will be conducted from 2019,” CISCE chief executive and secretary Gerry Arathoon said in a statement.

Candidates will be permitted to appear for “one subject only.”

“This examination will be held in the month of July and the results will be declared in the month of August,” he added.

From 2019 onwards, admission cards along with customised timetable will be provided to the schools/examination centres online in order to ensure timely receipt of documents by all personnel involved in the conduct of ICSE and ISC examinations, he said.

“For the ICSE examination, in addition to the subject-wise marks, paper-wise marks will also be provided for English, History, Civics, Geography and Science on the statement of marks,” he added.

From 2021 onwards, all candidates will be required to “compulsorily” study the prescribed Shakespearean play, prose (short stories) and poetry under the subject Literature in English (English paper-2) at the ICSE and ISC levels.

Upward mobility

“To bring about upward mobility, the Council will be tweaking the syllabus and question papers of certain major subjects in Classes IX and X to align it with the curriculum of Classes VI and VIII (from 2021 onwards,” Arathoon said

From the academic year 2019, training programme will be mandatory for teachers in “major subjects” at the elementary, ICSE and ISC levels, he added.
