<p>Vijaya Kumari G K of Arunodaya Evening College and Surana College’s Nivetha T were the stand out performers on the opening day of the 52nd Bangalore University Inter-collegiate Athletic Championship at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Thursday.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Vijaya Kumari was in fine form as she obliterated an 21-year-old meet record en route to her gold in the 800-metre run.<br /><br />The Arunodaya College student clocked 2:14.5 seconds for the top spot, fractions better than the pervious best set by Femi Thomas of Mount Carmel College at 2:15.50 in 1995. Kamalakshi of KIMSR, Srigandakaval was second in 2:23.0, while Darshan College’s Savitha V setteled for the bronze in 2:55.0.<br /><br />In the women’s shot put, it was Nivetha who bettered her own mark to clinch the gold medal. The Surana College student recorded a distance of 13.15 meters, to erase the pervious best of 12.29 metres that she had set at the 2015 meet. Ashlita F L of Kristhu Jayanthi College won the silver for a throw of 8.78 metres, while GFGC, Hoskote’s Shwetha H R completed the podium in with a throw of 8.55 metres.<br /></p>
