Karnataka Assembly session cut short, adjourned sine die

The session commenced on June two with the JDS of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda staying away from day one and the Congress also keeping off proceedings from last Friday.

Both parties have been demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and the Speaker K G Bopaiah contending that the Supreme Court had passed "strictures" against them while quashing the disqualification of 16 MLAs (the then 11 BJP rebels and five independents).

The government's stand is that the apex court had not passed any strictures, but only made certain observations on the disqualification order passed by Bopaiah. With opposition benches vacant, it was smooth sailing for the BJP government as bills were passed with no debate, and proceedings were a smooth affair with agenda being completed much earlier than expected.

Government sources said efforts were made persuade the opposition to participate in the proceedings but to no avail.
