Udupi numero uno in PU results

Udupi district stands first in II PU results in the state with a pass percentage of 92.20.

The district had secured 90.67 pass percentage in previous academic year. As many as 15,395 students-7,933 girls and 7,464 boys, had written the II PU examination.

A total of 13,485 students have cleared the examinations. As usual, the girls outnumber the boys in clearing the examination.

There is always an intense competition between Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in topping the state in II PU results.

In 2004-05, the district recorded pass percentage of 75.26 and stood second in the state. It bagged first place in 2005-06 by securing pass percentage of 79.96. However, it slipped to second place in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 by securing pass percentages of 79.65, 76.20 and 80.39 respectively.

But in 2009-10 and 2010-11, the district again bagged first place by securing pass percentages of 89.08 and 87.15 respectively. In 2011-12, it slipped to second position by securing pass percentage of 85.32 but in 2012-13, it again came first by securing 92.72%.

The district continuously bagged second position in the II PU results in 2013-14 when it secured 90.93%, 2014-15— 92.32% and 2015-16— 90.35 pass percentage. In 2016-17, it came first by securing 90.01% but again slipped to second position in 2017-18 when secured 90.67 pass percentage.

DDPU Subramanya Jhoshi told DH that the administration had organised refresher programmes for the teachers. While training camps were held for the students at regular intervals in the respective institutions. He lauded the efforts by the faculties as well as the students in achieving the number one position.

Toppers speak

Swathi Udaya Shankar from MGM College and Raeesa Umarabba from S R PU Collge in Hebri, both from science stream, have scored 592 each sharing the third position in the state.

Speaking to DH, Swathi said she wants to be an engineer. She has scored 96 in English, 98 in Hindi, 99 each in Physics and Computer Science and 100 each in Mathematics and Chemistry. She is the daughter of Syndicate Bank Manager Uday Shankar Nayak and Girija Bai.

“The result has boosted my self-confidence. Drawing helped me to relax my mind during studies. I used to read for three hours in a day and had attended coaching classes during holidays. I have not opened my account on Facebook,” she added.

“Along with textbooks, I used to read magazines and newspapers to improve my knowledge. I am interested in bhajan as well,” she added.

Sharing happiness over the results, Raeesa’s mother Ruksana said, “We are happy over her achievement. Though our house is situated in Puthige near Perdoor, we had rented a house in Hebri to help Raeesa attend her college.”

“I could not believe my ears when my friends begun calling me to wish me. I initially assumed that my friends were poking fun at me. But then I realised it was the fact when my College Chairman Nagaraj Shetty and Principal called me,” said Raeesa.

Looking at the results of my competitive examinations, I will decide on my future action,” she added.

She has scored 99 each in English and Hindi, 98 in Physics, 100 each in Chemistry and Biology and 99 in Mathematics.
