Now BJP, Congress spar over toilets!

Last Updated 26 April 2018, 11:30 IST

With the Karnataka Assembly election almost upon us, both the Congress and the BJP are trading barbs on Twitter about each other's failures.

#KarnatakaTrustsModi was the trending hashtag on Thursday morning as prime minister Modi interacted with local leaders through his App. Karnataka BJP sent out a series of tweets comparing Karnataka's development under 4 years of Modi government to that under the previous UPA government.

The posters titled 'Karnataka Development on Fast Track under Modi Govt' showed a number of infrastructural developments such as highway construction, renewable power capacity, funds allocation of urban infrastructure, LPG connections etc.

The graphic on household toilet constructions drew the attention of the Twitterati, due to an imbalance in the amounts spent under UPA and NDA. The poster claimed that during 4 years of UPA government, only 20-lakh toilets were built utilising Rs 350 crores whereas the NDA government had constructed 34-lakh toilets spending Rs 2,100 crores.

Soon, fact-checking expert Sam Jawed pointed out the imbalance. She said the cost of construction per toilet was 3.5 times higher during NDA rule in comparison to that of UPA. If you crunch the numbers, one toilet was built for Rs 1750 under the UPA government, while it was Rs 6076 under the NDA.

Congress supporters came up with a hypothesis of scams in toilet construction under the Modi government.

The Congress’ attempt to mock BJP's toilet data backfired when Twitteratti asked them to construct toilets with just Rs 1750.
