Exams to clear to study in a foreign university

Last Updated 30 March 2021, 07:06 IST

Dear Madam,

I am currently pursuing engineering in Electronics and Communication. I am having a hard time choosing between MBA, MEM or taking up a job. Is studying Master of Engineering Management abroad worth it? Can you please suggest a few universities? I am also worried about the financial issues that would come up.

Aditi

Dear Aditi,

MEM and MBA are both one year programmes in the United Kingdom and 2 years programmes in most other countries. The cost of tuition and living expenses put together in the UK will be around Rs 20 lakhs. Your student visa allows you to work for 20 hours per week and 40 hours during holidays and weekends. You are also allowed two years of stay back after you complete your studies. Entry requirement to UK universities is an IELTS academic test. If funds are an issue, Germany is a good option. Since most public universities are free for all including international students, getting admission into a good public university is always in high demand and highly competitive. You need to have good academic credentials, TOEFL score of 100 and above or IELTS of 6.5 and a score of over 320 in GRE. Most universities in all countries offer both MBA and MEM. Choose a university that is a good fit for you in terms of the course offered, the costs, scholarships, post-study work visa etc.

Dear Madam,

I am currently in II PU and want to pursue my engineering course in biotechnology or electrical/electronics stream. Does the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) ranking of engineering colleges really matter while getting an admission? Will it impact my admission in foreign universities?

Anirudh S

Dear Anirudh,

Always aim for the best universities, whether you study here or abroad. Join a well-known university. As far as admissions to foreign universities go, there are enough and more universities all over the world waiting to welcome Indian students. No matter which university you join, you should be happy and be able to give your 100%. As long as your undergraduate results are good, you can get into any university.

Dear Madam,

My daughter is studying in her final year Bachelor of Physiotherapy and wants to study her masters in a foreign university. Please suggest a good university and the exams she has to clear.

Bhavani

Dear Bhavani,

With a three year Bachelor’s degree, it is best she goes to the UK for her Masters. University of Nottingham, Cardiff University, Leeds Beckett University and Leeds are some good universities for Physiotherapy. The only exam she needs to take is the IELTS academic test which is a simple English language exam that tests one’s reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Dear Madam,

Which entrance exam should I take for a master's in aerospace or mechanical engineering in Germany? I am currently in final year BE Mechanical. What is the eligibility criteria and fees to study master's in Germany? Please suggest some universities I can apply for.

Ruqaiya Mehwish

Dear Ruqaiya,

You must write the GRE and either one of the English tests. Both TOEFL and IELTS are accepted by German universities. Eligibility criteria includes a high GPA, an impressive letter of intent, a well put together resume and if you know German language, it will be considered an added advantage.

Dear Madam,

I was wondering if it is possible to get into a university abroad after Class 12 for an integrated degree (Bachelors and Masters). Some people say that countries are not accepting international students as they give preference to their nationals for employment.

Deeptha Shree

Dear Deeptha,

Universities abroad thrive only because of international students from across the world. So be rest assured that they want you and will always welcome you. As far as employment goes, it is up to each individual to prove themselves and find a job. After 12th, you can certainly go abroad and join a programme which has masters integrated with its degree course.
