Study Abroad

Dear Madam,

I have completed Automobile Engineering with a good percentage and am currently working in a core MNC. I want to do Motorsport Engineering in the UK and work with a racing organisation on the completion of the course. I would like to join Brunel, Cranfield or Oxford Brookes University. Do let me know about the examinations I have to take and the selection process. Is two-year part-time course better than one year full-time?  Also, give details of the scholarships I can apply for and the options available if I fail to land a job in the UK.

Dear Rishi,

The only exam you need to take to go to the universities you have listed out is the IELTS which is a simple English language test. As an international student, you will be eligible for a student visa only if you pursue a full-time course. University scholarships will be available to all applicants based on your GPA and other credentials. Prepare an interesting resume highlighting your achievements in academics, sports and extracurriculars. Write a clear statement of purpose explaining your career goals. You would have to write an additional essay for scholarships. You could also apply to external agencies here in India for scholarships. At the moment, chances of landing a job in the UK is pretty low. You could find jobs in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Dear Madam,

I am a final year student in Information Science and Engineering. I want to pursue an MS in Data Science, in countries like Switzerland, France, England, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, etc. I am going to take up the IELTS test immediately and am confident of getting a good score. I currently have a CGPA of 8.16 till the 6th semester. Suggest good universities, in terms of quality of education, people and job opportunities, in the above-mentioned countries and other European or Australian countries for Data Science. Also, with my current CGPA and a moderate resume, what are the chances of getting accepted in these universities and in universities like ETH Zurich? Does the college where I am studying currently matter during the application process?

Dear Suhas,

I am listing out the universities that are known for Data Science in the countries you have mentioned:

Switzerland: ETH in Zurich, EPFL in Lausanne, IHEID in Geneva and University of Lausanne.

France: Data Science Tech Institute, Ecole Polytechnique, University Paris – Saclay.

England: University of Edinburgh, University of Warwick, Kings College London, University of Leeds and Glasgow University.

New Zealand: University of Canterbury.

Norway: University of Oslo

Ireland: Trinity College of Dublin, Dublin Business School, National College of Ireland.

Your chances of getting into one of the top schools are very high. The college where you are studying currently doesn’t really matter as long as it is a recognised university.

Dear Madam,

I am in the 6th semester of Computer Science engineering. I am planning to pursue MS abroad. Can you suggest some good courses, the process involved, scholarship and the best universities?

Dear Pavan,

Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, ETH Zurich, University of Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Harvard University, Princeton University, National University of Singapore, University of Edinburgh, Technical University of Munich, University of Toronto, Tsinghua University and Peking University are among the best in the world for Masters in Computer Science Engineering.

Popular specialisations include Artificial Intelligence, Computer and Network Security, Big Data Analysis, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Management and Analytics, Mobile and Internet Computing, Interface design, Machine learning, Embedded systems, Computer graphics and visualisation, Bioinformatics and Medical image computing.

You need to start the application process one year ahead of the start date of the course. All applications for admissions and scholarships are online on the respective university websites. You need to take an English test like IELTS / TOEFL ibt / PTE. Before you register for one of these tests, check what is preferred by the university you are applying to. USA, Canada, Singapore and some European universities would also require a GRE test. For more information, visit www.umaaswani.com.

Dear Madam,

I am looking for free educational opportunities in foreign countries. Could you help me with information?

Dear Zabi,

I am not sure if you are looking for free education at the undergraduate or masters level. In any case, nothing in life comes absolutely free!

If your academic grades are very good and you are a highly talented individual, you will be considered for scholarships. External agencies such as the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation in India fund meritorious candidates for tuition and living expenses provided the subject and university choice is approved by them. Public universities in Germany are free of tuition fee for all students. You would have to fund your living expenses.

If you are a PhD student, most doctoral programmes are fully funded. To be admitted into these programmes, you need to communicate extensively with many university professors and convince one of them to accept you.

US universities offer Graduate assistantship, research assistantship, fellowship etc to students with a high GPA and a good GRE score.

In many countries, you can also work part-time on your student visa. That will help you to some extent in paying for your living expenses.

Dear Madam,

My son has done his BCA with good academic records. He is looking for higher education in areas related to cybersecurity abroad. What are the future job prospects after doing the course? Do we have any other sought-after courses? Can you suggest websites that have these details?

Dear Vinod,

If your son has done a 3-year BCA program, I would recommend UK, New Zealand and Australia. The other countries would want a 4-year Bachelor’s degree like BE or BTech. For all these countries, he would have to write only the IELTS exam.

Lancaster University, University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, City University London, University of York, University of Southampton and Royal Holloway are known for cybersecurity programs in the UK.

In New Zealand, Auckland University of Technology, University of Canterbury and the University of Waikato are among the best for cybersecurity.

Australian universities that offer Masters in Cyber Security are Deakin, Latrobe, UNSW and the University of South Australia.
