'They give safe haven to terrorists...': Trump's old post resurfaces on X amid India-Pakistan tensions

An old post on X by Trump has resurfaced, where he had claimed that the US 'foolishly' gave over $33 billion to Pakistan. The tweet was originally posted on January 1, 2018.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after talks mediated by the US.

"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," Trump posted on Truth Social.

"Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he added.

However, within four hours after the two countries agreed to a ceasefire, multiple explosions were reported in Srinagar and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Amid Pakistan's ceasefire violation, an old post on X by Trump is resurfacing, where he had claimed that the US "foolishly" gave over $33 billion to Pakistan. The tweet was originally posted on January 1, 2018 and is now garnering attention of netizens.

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools," the post read.

"They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" Trump had added.

The resurfacing of the post comes just days after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday approved the immediate disbursement of about $1 billion to Pakistan under the ongoing Extended Fund Faci­li­ty.

In a statement, the Washington-based global lender said its Executive Board concluded the initial review of Pakistan’s economic reform programme under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement.

India earlier had raised concerns over the efficacy of IMF programmes in the case of Pakistan, given its poor track record, and also on the possibility of misuse of debt financing funds for state-sponsored cross-border terrorism.

New Delhi opposed the IMF's proposal to extend fresh loans of $2.3 billion to Pakistan, saying they could be misused for financing state-sponsored cross-border terrorism, and abstained from voting at the crucial IMF meeting.

On Sunday, Trump praised the "strong and unwaveringly powerful" leadership of India and Pakistan for reaching a ceasefire, saying their legacy is greatly enhanced by their brave actions."

Further, he also said he would increase trade with both India and Pakistan in a Truth Social Post late on Saturday.

"I will work with India Pakistan to see if, after a 'thousand years,' a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir", he further added.
