Congress on Wednesday accused the Modi government of clamping an “undeclared emergency” in the country and expressed dismay at the alleged black out of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar's Independence Day address by public broadcaster Doordarshan.

“With each passing day, it has become very hard for the Opposition parties to make their voice reach the people of the country,” AICC General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters.

He said the news bulletin on All India Radio on the night of August 15 also made no mention of the names of the chief ministers in non-BJP states.

“Is there anything called democracy? It is a matter of shame.... there is undeclared emergency in the country,” the Congres leader said.

Azad wondered whether opposition leaders will now have to get their speeches cleared from the BJP.
