Uruguay trump Russia to top group

Russia were handed a World Cup reality check on Monday, losing 0-3 to Uruguay, while Saudi Arabia eked out a consolation 2-1 win over Egypt in another inconsequential Group A match.

An early free-kick from Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, an own goal from Denis Cheryshev and a late strike from Edinson Cavani sealed a top spot in Group A for Uruguay, with Russia through to the knockout stages as runners-up.

In Sunday’s last match, Colombia registered an emphatic 3-0 win to knock Poland out of the tournament and keep their hopes alive of qualifying for last-16 stage from Group H.

Meanwhile Switzerland trio of Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri and Stephan Lichtsteiner escaped bans on Monday for celebrating goals with a pro-Kosovo double eagle gesture in their World Cup win over Serbia.
