Over 18.85 Cr voters to decide fate of 1640 candidates

Over 18.85 crore voters are expected to cast votes in about 2.10 lakh polling stations of 117 constituencies set to go to polls in the third phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday.

Altogether 1640candidates are in the fray to enter the Lok Sabha to represent the 117 constituencies spread over 13 States and two Union Territories.

Key things to know about Phase 3 pols

Among the 13 states going to polls on Tuesday, all eyes will be on Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, where 10 and 26 seats are up for grabs. The BJP had won all the 26 seats in Gujarat in 2014. The BJP president Amit Shah is contesting from Gandhinagar constituency in the State this time. Of the 10 Uttar Pradesh constituencies going to polls in the third phase, the BJP had won in seven in the 2014 elections. Among the prominent candidates whose fates would be decided on Tuesday are Mulayam Singh of the Samajwadi Party and Varun Gandhi of the BJP, who are contesting in Mainpuri and Pilibhit constituencies of the State.

Another state to watch is Kerala where Congress president Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.

The Election Commission has made a unique arrangement for Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, in view of the prevailing security situation. The constituency will go to polls in three phases. The polling will be held in Anantnag district of the Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday. The Kulgam district of the constituency will go to polls on April 29 while Shopian and Pulwama districts will do on May 6.

Though polling for the Tripura East – one of the two Lok Sabha seats from Tripura – was scheduled to take place in the second phase, the EC postponed it to the third phase as it felt that additional security personnel should be deployed to maintain law and order.

The EC also cancelled the polling in Vellore Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu after seizure of a huge amount of money. The commission is yet to decide when the election would be held in the constituency, which was earlier scheduled to go to polls in the second phase on April 18.

2.43 crore to vote in 14 N K’taka seats today

Buoyed by an impressive voter turnout in the first phase, election authorities are hoping for a high polling percentage on Tuesday when 2.43 crore people across 14 Lok Sabha segments in northern Karnataka will get to exercise their franchise.

There are 237 candidates in the fray in what is a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress. Voting will happen from 7 am to 6 pm in 28,022 polling stations.

Belagavi: Twin sisters 19-year-old Lakshmi and Saraswati Sammannavar voted for the first time at polling booth no 57 at Sankeshwar in Chikkodi Parliamentary Constituency in Belagavi.

A pregnant woman from Bengaluru travelled to Belagavi district to cast her vote, on Tuesday.

Apoorva Hiremath, a resident of ward no-1 in Bellary city, voted at polling booth - 34 located at Government PU College.

Apoorva, daughter of Siddarama Hiremath - a lecturer and Vidya, is currently employed at an IT firm in Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters, she said that she was determined to vote despite her pregnancy as she was not able to vote in the past two elections.

Her husband, Sagar Hiremath voted in Dharwad.

Congress MLA from Bellary Rural B Nagendra on Tuesday said he will not quit the party and expressed hope that senior party leaders will sort out all issues.

“I have won (as MLA) from the Congress party, and I will remain in the party. There are certain differences and I am confident that the party seniors will sort out all issue,” he told reporters.

Nagendra is a close follower of senior Congress MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, who is said to have rebelled against the party. His statement assumes significance amidst speculations that the disgruntled Congress legislators may leave the party after the Lok Sabha polls.

On Ramesh being upset with the party, Nagendra said there were certain issues among Jarkiholi brothers in Belagavi. The party will soon sort out everything.

Shivamogga: Voters returning homes without casting votes at Arahatolalu village in Shimoga Rural assembly constituency due to the faulty electronic voting machine in polling booth number 166.

They waited for more than an hour for the replacement of the machine. But the officials concerned did not turn up at the polling booth.

Shivakka Patil a 100-year-old voter from Ghatanur village in Ramdurg taluk coming under Belgaum Parliamentary Constituency arrived in a wheelchair to cast her vote on Tuesday.

A couple from Uttara Kannada district working in the Czech Republic, cast their votes in Uttara Kannada district.

The couple, Sowmya and Vineeth, are working as scientists in the country. While Sowmya voted at Sirsi, Vineeth voted in Harihara.

"Voting is our right and makes us proud about being Indians. We can question our elected representatives only if we vote," Sowmya said, adding that it was the reason why they spent lakhs to come and vote.

Dalits boycott elections in Belagavi

Belagavi:

Dalits boycott elections at Ghataknurin Ramdurg village condemning social boycott allegedly imposed against them in Belagavi Parliamentary Constituency.

The members belonging to the Dalit community opposing the social boycott imposed against them by upper-class people, for not beating the drums, boycotted the elections.

Dalits did not turn up to polling station. Efforts were made by election officials to convince them.

Only after tahasildar Basangouda Kottur, DSP BS Patil convinced with assurances of dealing with the issue, the Dalits turned up at 12 PM and voted.

BJP has decided to a complaint with the Election Commission after the party’s booth-level agents were allegedly prevented from carrying out their duty in the Lok Sabha segments of Gulbarga, Bagalkot and Bijapur. BJP MLC N Ravikumar will lead a delegation to meet Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar in Bengaluru.

Residents of Kuranalli village in Bhalki taluk of Bidar district, who boycotted the polls as their demands remain unfulfilled, withdrew their protest and began voting after Bidar Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Mahantesh Bilagi visited the village and convinced them to cast vote by assuring them of addressing their demand.

The people had been urging for a 2-km road connecting their village with the main road. The village is also facing an acute drinking water crisis. Protesting the authorities' negligence in addressing their issues, the villagers had boycotted the polls.

Ramesh Jarkiholi hints of quitting Congress

Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi said that he would soon quit asMLA of the Congress party, but has not decided when he woulddo it. “As of now, technically, I am an MLA of Congress. I will decide the next course of action afterquitting,” Jarkiholi said.

Thundershowers along with gusty winds have affected polling in parts of Uttara Kannada Parliamentary constituency on Tuesday. In Sirsi, heavy showers have disrupted polling.
In Mundgod, several polling agents had a lucky escape after a tree fell near the polling station. Heavy rainfall had lasted for more than 30 minutes, which was followed by a steady drizzle in the region.

Scattered showers were also reported at Hadadi village of Davanagere taluk.
