17 killed as wall collapses in TN village following rains

In a major rain-related incident in Tamil Nadu, at least 17 people, including ten women and two children, were killed in their sleep when a wall collapsed on a row of houses in a village near here on Monday, police said. A portion of the 15-foot tall private compound wall, totally wet due to heavy rains lashing the area for the past few days, fell on the adjoining tiled-roof houses in Nadur village, over 50 kms from here, around 5 am, burying alive the inmates. Villagers said the wall built abutting the houses had been an issue. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu: Flood alert issued in Erode district

A flood alert has been issued to people living on the banks of river Bhavani in this western district of Tamil Nadu as a dam built across it has surplussed in the wake of copious rains in catchment areas, officials said on Monday.

The water level in the Lower Bhavani Project reservoir reached its maximum of 105 feet and the storage crossed 32 tmc feet against a maximum of 32.8 tmc ft, prompting the Public Works Department authorities to more than triple discharge from 3,500 cusecs to 11,950 cusecs on Monday morning.

Tamil Nadu: 15 die in wall collapse in Mettupalayam

At least 15 people, including 10 women and two children, died after three houses collapsed at a village near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district on Monday morning due to heavy rains that have been lashing Tamil Nadu since Saturday.

The incident took place at Nadur village near Mettupalayam on Monday morning when a compound wall collapsed trapping those living in all three houses under the debris. Rescue operations are on to pull out those trapped inside, officials said, adding that at least 15 people have died in the incident.

TN drenched in rains; over 1000 evacuated

Several districts in Tamil Nadu were completely drenched in rains on Sunday for the second consecutive day as the North-East Monsoon intensified across the southern state.

Five people lost their lives due to rain-related incidents across the state on Sunday, officials said, even as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and other coastal districts for the next two days.

Rains also resulted in an increase in the capacity of several dams and reservoirs that supply drinking water to Chennai and other parts of the state.

The city and other coastal districts will receive heavy rainfall for the next two days, according to a forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

In Chennai, the rains that began on Saturday continued through Sunday forcing residents to be indoors. Several major roads were waterlogged and people were evacuated in Varadharajapuram and other areas due to streets getting flooded.

As the IMD forecast heavy rains, holiday was declared to schools in seven districts -- Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Kanchipuram -- on Monday. Chennai Corporation and district administrations also announced helpline numbers for people to seek help in case they get affected due to rains.
