Over 26.26% voter turnout was reported till 11 am in Meghalaya.

Give change a chance: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge to voters

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday urged the people of Meghalaya and Nagaland to give change a chance as polling in the two northeast states was underway.

"People of Meghalaya and Nagaland are looking towards progressive, welfare-oriented governments," Kharge said in a tweet.

"Welcome our first time voters to participate in this democratic process for a better future. Urge our sisters and brothers of Meghalaya and Nagaland to give change a chance," he said.

The election officials said that they did not receive any report of untoward incidents so far from any of the 59 constituencies, except some technical hitches of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at a few polling stations.

In Meghalaya, again a battle between Sangmas and their political mettle

Football and guitar are their common love but the two Sangmas, Conrad and Mukul, are two equally strong players in the ensuing poll battle in Meghalaya.

Taking his father PA Sangma's legacy strongly forward, Conrad, now 45, has not only run the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) since 2018 without hiccups but also fulfilled his father's dream of attaining national party status for the National People's Party (NPP), in 2019. The NPP had won 19 out of 60 seats in the 2018 elections but Conrad managed to stitch an alliance with other regional parties and BJP and denied Mukul Sangma-led Congress its third straight term in office. Congress had emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats.

Upon entering the polling booth, one will find three polling officers seated next to one another.

1. First, one has to go to the left-most polling officer for identity verification. One has to show a Voter ID or any other valid document to complete theverification.
