    Irish Covid-19 'test and trace' system overwhelmed by case surge

    Ireland's system for tracing contacts of Covid-19 cases has been overwhelmed by a surge in cases forcing the health service in recent days to advise infected individuals to identify their own close contacts and tell them to get tested, officials said.

    The government earlier this year hired hundreds of people to quickly contact those who test positive, identify people they had close contact with in the preceding days, and tell those people to self-isolate and get tested.

    Bulgarian president tests negative for Covid-19

    Indonesia reported 4,267 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday, taking the total to 373,109, data from the country's Covid-19 task force showed.

    It also confirmed 123 new deaths, taking total Covid-19 fatalities to 12,857. The number of infections and deaths are the most in the Southeast Asia region.

    Poland's total coronavirus cases top 200,000

    Poland's total number of confirmed coronavirus infections has doubled in less than three weeks and now exceeds 200,000, the health ministry said, as it announced a new daily record of 10,040 new cases.

    Poland has now recorded 202,579 cases and 3,851 deaths, 130 of those reported on Wednesday. It passed 100,000 infections on Oct. 4.

    Almost 80% of Tokyo Games volunteers concerned about Covid-19: survey

    Almost 80% of volunteers for next year's rearranged Summer Olympics are concerned about the spread of the novel coronavirus, a Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) survey showed.

    The Games were postponed until 2021 because of the pandemic and the survey of over 13,000 volunteers found almost half were also worried about the impact the delay will have "on the level of enthusiasm".

    Czech Deputy Prime Minister Hamacek tests positive for Covid-19

    Czech Deputy Prime Minister Jan Hamacek, who is also the interior minister, has tested positive for Covid-19, he confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday. Hamacek, 41, is chief of the Social Democratic Party, junior partner in the ruling coalition, and is also head of the crisis committee coordinating logistical efforts to counter the pandemic.

    Philippines reports 1,509 new coronavirus cases, 60 more deaths

    The Philippine health ministry on Wednesday confirmed 1,509 new coronavirus infections, its lowest daily increase in cases in more than six weeks.

    In a bulletin, the ministry said there were 60 additional Covid-19 deaths confirmed. Total cases have risen to 362,243 while deaths have reached 6,747.

    Odisha reports 1,931 new Covid-19 cases, 13 more fatalities

    Odisha on Wednesday reported 1,931 new Covid-19 cases, which took the tally in the coastal state to 2,74,181, while 13 fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 1,181, a health department official said.

    Of the new cases, 1,120 were reported from various quarantine centres and 811 people detected during contact tracing, he said.

    Russia records 15,700 new coronavirus cases, hits daily record high of 317 deaths

    Russia recorded 15,700 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday, as well as a daily record high of 317 deaths from the highly-contagious virus.

    Since the start of the pandemic, the country of about 145 million people has recorded 1,447,335 infections and 24,952 deaths, the authorities said.

    Three U-19 Bangladesh cricketers test positive for Covid-19

    Three Bangladesh U-19 national team cricketers have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, while 15 others are symptomatic, according to a newspaper report.

    In a report published in Dhaka-based "The Business Standard", Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) game development manager AEM Kawser was quoted as saying that all the players were part of the training camp being held at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) as a part of Junior Asia Cup preparations, a tournament which now stands cancelled.

    Three people, including a 78- year old woman, died of Covid-19 on Wednesday, taking the toll to 580 in the union territory. In the last 24 hours ending 10 am today, 175 new cases were identified at the end of examination of 4,033 samples, raising the overall cases to 33,622.

    Australia reports rare case of coronavirus reinfection

    Australian authorities say they're treating a Covid-19 case in the city of Melbourne as a rare reinfection.

    The only coronavirus case reported in the former hot spot of Victoria state on Tuesday had also tested positive to Covid-19 in July.

    Victoria Premier Dan Andrews said Wednesday an expert panel had decided to classify the case as a reinfection rather than shedding viral remnants of the July infection.

    Jharkhand reports 542 new Covid-19 cases, seven fresh fatalities

    Jharkhand's Covid-19 tally rose to 97,414 as 542 more people tested positive for the infection, a health department official said on Wednesday.

    Seven more patients succumbed to the disease, pushing the state's coronavirus death toll to 849, he said.

    Of the fresh fatalities, two were reported from Ranchi and one each from East Singhbhum, Bokaro, Saraikela, Khunti and Dhanbad, the official said.

    New Zealand reported two new cases of Covid-19 in the community linked to a port worker who tested positive over the weekend, and 23 imported cases.

    Centre to drop plasma therapy to treat Covid-19

    Armed with scientific evidence proving its futility, the Centre is set to drop the convalescent plasma therapy as a Covid-19 treatment option from the national treatment guidelines.

    US reports about 300,000 more deaths during Covid-19 than in typical year

    Nearly 300,000 more people have died in the United States in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic than would be expected based on historical trends, with at least two-thirds due to Covid-19, a government report released on Tuesday showed, adding that Covid deaths likely were undercounted.

    The report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 299,028 more people died between Jan. 26 and Oct. 3 than the average numbers from past years would have indicated.
