"The depression is likely to remain practically stationary over the same (Ramanathapuram) region and weaken into a Well marked Low-Pressure Area during the next 12 hours (by early Saturday)," the latest bulletin said. While there was widespread rainfall covering many parts of the state, several regions reported heavy to extremely heavy rains, including Kollidam (36 cm, Nagapattinam district), Chidambaram (34 cm, Cuddalore).

In a relief to Kerala, the Met department has withdrawn the red alert issued for Cyclone Burevi and rains in the seven southernmost districts of the state as thedeep depression was likely to weaken further into a depression.

Heavy rains lash Puducherry

Heavy rains lashed Puducherry and its suburban areas on Friday under the influence of cyclone Burevi.

Official sources told P T I that during the last 24 hours ending 8.30 AM Friday, Puducherry recorded around 14 cm rainfall.

"There has been extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry under its influence. Very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely to continue over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry today," said IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

"Cyclone Burevi lays over Gulf of Mannar near south Tamil Nadu coast. Wind speed is 50-60 kmph. It has remained stationary for past 12 hours. It'll further weaken into depression while moving westward across south Tamil Nadu coast during next 12 hrs," he said

Kerala: Operations at Trivandrum International Airport to resume from 4 pm today following the latest weather forecast.

The deep depression is likely to remain practically stationary over the same region and weaken into a depression during next 12 hours. Thereafter, it will move slowly west southwestwards across Ramanathapuram district towards south Kerala and weaken into a well-marked Low-Pressure Area during subsequent 24 hours, says IMD.

Severe thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur over Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Karaikal area and Moderate thunderstorm with moderate rain is likely to occur over Ariyalur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Krishnagiri, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu during next three hours.

Thiruvananthapuram Airport suspends operations from 10 am to 6 pm for today in the wake of a cyclone warning. Airlines have beenadvised to reschedule services as per the convenience of passengers. Airport operations will remain open for any emergency situation, sayAirport officials.

The deep depression over Gulf of Mannar at 5:30 am, which was close to Ramanathapuram district coast, remained practically stationary, about 40 km southwest of Ramanathapuram, 70 km west-southwest of Pamban. Associated wind speed is about 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph, says IMD.The deep depression is likely to move slowly west-south westwards and cross Ramanathapuram and adjoining Thoothukudi districts during next six hours with wind speed of 50-60gusting to 70 kmph. It is very likely to weaken further into a depression (wind speed 45-55 kmph gusting to 65kmph) during next 12hours.

As per the latest IMD observations, heavy to very heavy/extremely heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Toothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, Thiruchi, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Myladuthurai, Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram districts and Puducherry during the next six hours.
