Parts of Odisha received very heavy rain on Sunday with the state still bracing for more downpour over the next three days due to a depression that is set to take shape over the Bay of Bengal.
A low pressure area, which formed on Saturday, has concentrated into a well-marked system over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh, the Met office said. (PTI)

The Idukki district administration on Sunday banned all tourism-related activities here until further notice due to landslips reported in the district following heavy rains.
The District Collector made the announcement and has directed the district police chief, the regional transport officer and other officials to take necessary steps including at areas bordering the district to ensure that tourism activities are suspended.
Authorities noted that due to recent rains, landslides were reported in the district and continuing tourist inflow may result in more accidents. (PTI)

Several rivers are in spate after heavy rains lashed many parts of Karnataka, especially villages located near Tunga and Tungabhadra rivers, officials said.
At least one lakh cusecs of water was released from Tungabhadra dam into the Tungabhadra river following heavy downpour in the catchment region and heavy inflow of water in Vijayanagara district.

Climate change has hampered the ability of forecasting agencies to accurately predict severe events and the India Meteorological Department is installing more radars and upgrading its high-performance computing system to meet the challenge, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Sunday.
He also said that though the monsoon rainfall has not shown any significant trend in the country, the number of heavy rainfall events has increased and that of light rainfall events has decreased due to climate change.
The impact-based forecast will improve to become "more granular, specific and accurate" by 2025 and IMD will be able to provide forecasts up to panchayat level clusters and specific areas in cities in the coming years, the IMD chief said.

Nine people were killed and two others injured after lightning struck them in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha, Satna and Guna districts in the last 24 hours, officials said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places in the state on Sunday. In Vidisha, four people were killed after lightning struck them on Saturday evening while they were standing under a tree for shelter during rain in Agasod village in Ganjbasoda tehsil, about 45 km from the district headquarters, city police station inspector Kunwar Singh Mukati told PTI.

Maharashtra has received 27 per cent more rains than normal recorded in the months of June and July, despite the dull start to the monsoon season this year, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. As per the data compiled by the IMD, the state had received 677.5 mm rainfall till July 31, which is 27 per cent more than its normal figures, a senior IMD official said. (PTI)

Weather is likely to remain mainly dry with light rain at isolated places during the next 24 hours, said the Meteorological (MeT) Department on Sunday.
The weather remained dry in J&K during the last 24 hours.

The Kerala High Court has said the state government has to "take proper and prompt action" to prevent disasters during monsoons and otherwise, and has initiated a public interest litigation (PIL) on its own to monitor flood relief activities in the southern state. It directed its registry to register the suo motu (on its own) petition by arraying the state and its departments of Local Self Government, Power and Water Resources, the Disaster Management Authority and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
