After Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya presented the West Bengal Budget proposals for the financial year 2023-24 on Wednesday, a political slugfest has erupted in the state over them.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the Budget as a growth-oriented one maintaining a balance in social development with focus on employment generation and economic growth.
"Despite the adverse attitude of the Union government towards West Bengal, especially with regard to payment of central dues to the state, we have tried with our limited means to provide as much relief as possible to the people. This is truly a humanitarian Budget," the Chief Minister said.
According toBJPlegislator and former chief economic advisor to the Union government, Ashok Kumar Lahiri, there is no direction in the Budget to control the rising accumulated debt of the state.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday took a dim view of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's claim that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had tried to put him in jail, and asked the BJP leader in which case was he "fearing" arrest.

Chandrima Bhattacharya on Wednesday presented aRs 3.39 lakh crore Budget in the West Bengal Assembly.
"While the Indian economy is expected to grow at 6.95 per cent, in the current financial year 2022-23, West Bengal economy is expected to grow at 8.41 per centin the same period," Bhattacharya said.
West Bengal's GST revenue grew at 23 per centin the last financial year and this year cumulative growth up to January 2023 is 24.46 per cent.

Law Minister and BJP leader Kiren Rijiju said he is suffering from viral fever and will not be campaigning in Meghalaya on Wednesday for assembly polls.
Rijiju had been campaigning in Tripura ahead of Thursday's assembly polls.
"Suffering from acute viral fever since last 24 hours ... I've been asked to remain indoor and take rest," he wrote on Twitter.
The minister said he will miss Wednesday's public meetings in Meghalaya.
