Six women devotees were run over by a speeding train at Chunar railway station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district on Wednesday morning.

According to the police sources here, the women, who were on their way to take bath in the Ganga on the occasion of Kartik Poornima, were run over by Howrah-Kalka Netaji Express when they were trying to cross the track.

All the devotees had got off at Chuna railway station from another train and were trying to cross the tracks from the wrong side though there was a foot over bridge at the station to cross over to other platforms.

The police had a tough time in collecting the pieces of the bodies as their body parts were spread several metres away from the tracks, sources said.

Sources said that the deceased included three members of a family, who hailed from Rajgarh area in the district.

Senior officials from the railways and police reached the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem examination. The movement of trains on the section was briefly affected after the incident.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath and union minister Anupriya Patel expressed grief over the incident.

A large number of devotees flock the Ganga ghats on the occasion of Kartik Poornima to take bath in the river.
