India hope to clip Kiwi wings!

Those iconic stadium steeples, the Dauladhar mountain range in the background, the thin air, the perpetual dance of sun and shadow followed by an eerie moon…

The poetry-inspiring conditions, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium will become the theatre for a tournament-defining contest today as India and New Zealand run into each other with a point to prove on says Roshan Thyagarajan.

HPCA Stadium, Pitch Report by Ravi Shastri and Simon Doull

The dynamic duo of Shastri and Doull point out that it's the least grass they've seen in Dharamsala, it will be on the slower side.

What one must worry about is the dew, and how much dew comes on. It is a lot cooler here, so that will be a factor taken into account as well.

This pitch will be on the slower side, but still a good wicket to bat on. Despite there being dew, teams though shouldn't be afraid to bat first.

India and New Zealand Team News!

India will be without Hardik Pandya who twisted his ankle in the game against Bangladesh. Mohammad Shami and Suryakumar Yadav could come in to balance the side with Shardul Thakur likely to miss out.

New Zealand will continue to be without captain Kane Williamson who injured his fingers and isn't fit yet. Tim Southee is back fit but the Kiwis are unlikely to tweak with their winning combination.

Toss: India win toss, choose to bowl!

Rohit Sharma says India will back their strength to chase in these conditions

No particular reason. In training yesterday we thought dew came in early. Good pitch, shouldn't change too much. (Unbeaten so far) Important to keep momentum going and forget the past. We know the nature of the WC - all teams can beat anyone. (Dharamsala conditions) This is one place everyone wants to come and play. Pictureseque. (Injury issues) No Hardik. Shardul also misses out. Shami and Suryakumar are in.
Rohit Sharma (India Captain)

No changes for the Kiwis as Tom Latham says they would've liked to bowl first as well

We would've bowled first as well due to the dew. (Unbeaten run) We have built a bit of momentum and we have tried to apply our game plan. Want to adapt as quick as we can to these new conditions. Can't afford to put guard down, anyone can beat anyone. (Combination) Same team.
Tom Latham (New Zealand Captain)

Team India's head coach Rahul Dravid slammed the ICC over 'average' pitch ratings

You knew there was trouble brewing when mid-way through answering a question in Hindi, Rahul Dravid said: “…maybe I’ll answer this English so I don’t get myself into trouble.” says Roshan Thyagarajan

Teams walk out for the national anthems!

There's plenty of noise around the ground India and New Zealand walk out for the national anthems.

It's going to be a sea of blue today in Dharamsala, but there's still some empty stands for now with spectators slowly making their way in.

Here's a look at why New Zealand are missing regular captain Kane Williamson. The skipper injured his thumb on his comeback to the side from an ACL injury and faces another spell on the sidelines.

He's with the team though, motivating the squad with his presence.

India win by 4 wickets!

Another dominant display from the hosts as they consolidate top-spot on the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Points Table.

Mohammed Shami (5/54) was the hero with the ball as he became the first Indian bowler to grab two World Cup fifers to restrict New Zealand to just 273.

Then Rohit Sharma (46) provided yet another fast start before Virat Kohli (95) stepped up in the middle to guide India to the cusp of victory.

Ravindra Jadeja (39* off 44 balls) also got some much-needed time out in the middle with the bat as he guided India home to make it five wins out of five at the tournament.

New Zealand see their own unbeaten streak broken as they move down to second spot on the points table.

Player of the Match is Mohammed Shami for his 5/54!

When you come back after a long time to the XI it is important to get confidence early. That first game helped get that confidence,. Its not too hard (waiting by the sidelines) if your team is doing well. They are your teammates and if they are doing well then you should be supporting them. If its in the team's interest, I'm okay with it. The wickets are important because we were top 2 teams of the World Cup were playing.
Mohammed Shami (Player of the Match)

What's next for both sides?

India have a bit of a break now as they travel to Lucknow where they'll take on a England next Sunday on October 29.

New Zealand will look to recover from their first defeat of the tournament as they stay in Dharamsala where they welcome Australia on Ocotber 28.

The wishes start pouring in for the Men in Blue!

Tom Latham thinks the last 10 overs with the bat cost his team!

We didn't capitalise in the last ten overs (with the bat). India bowled well in the death and we left a few runs out there. With the ball, we never got a double breakthrough. I don't think we capitalised, 30-40 short. Daryl and Rachin set us up well for the back ten. From a batting point of view, Ravindra and Daryll gave the perfect blueprint. That are positions we want to be in, and when we get things right at the back end, we are dangerous. Kohli played a fantastic innings. Controlled the tempo and the rest could bat around him. As a captain, you have to be proactive but also work to your plans. Think about match-ups. Virat has a response to most plans. The fog was very random - sometimes you get in random situations. Few days off, and next is a day game in about a week (against Australia).
Tom Latham (New Zealand Captain)

Rohit Sharma credits his bowlers who played a big part in that win

Good start to the tournament but job is half done. Shami took the opportunity with both hands. He's got class and so much experience and he used the conditions really well. At one stage NZ put up a big partnership there. Dew came in as well. But we have to give credits to the bowlers in the back end. Shubman and I compliment each other quite well in the middle. Couldn't get big enough runs ourselves but happy to win. Nothing much to say about Virat. We've seen him do this for so many years. He backs himself to do the job. Towards the end there was a bit of pressure with a few wickets lost, but Kohli and Jadeja took us home. Fielding is something we pride ourselves on. It wasn't as clinical as we'd like to. Couple of dropped catches but those guys are good, Jadeja is among the best in the game. We love travelling and playing in different parts of the country. So far we have not been disappointed and we have not disappointed the crowd as well.
Rohit Sharma (India Captain)
