Last week, Oppo launched the new Find X8 series premium phone in India with prices starting at Rs 69,999.

It comes in two variants-- a top-end Find X8 Pro and a regular Find X8. They feature similar design language but differ in a few aspects such as screen, primary camera and battery capacity. The rest of the features remain the same.

Both the devices will be available from December 3 on Oppo e-store, Flipkart, and across mainline retail outlets.

I have been using the standard Find X8 device for a little over a week and here are my thoughts on Oppo's latest premium Android phone.

Design, build quality and display

Oppo Find X8 comes in a flat chocolate bar-like design language and is made of premium materials. The rails around the sides and the internal structure are made of sturdy aluminium.

On the back, it also features high-quality frosted glass with a matte finish. It does an amazing job of repelling the sweaty fingerprint smudges. However, the big circular camera island at the top (Oppo calls it Cosmos Rings), protrudes a bit. As you can see, in the photo below, a lot of dust settles on it. The user has to clean quite often.

The flat railings on the side and the super thin 1.45mm uniform bezels on four sides, make it look like an iPhone. Few in my office and family members confused it for an Apple device.

But, only when you see the back with the Cosmos Ring camera module, one can know it is an Oppo phone.

The Phone is super light to carry around. It weighs just 193 grams and the display too is very compact; it is so easy to operate with a single hand to message and scroll on social media apps and on the web to read news or read long emails with such ease.

And, an interesting thing to note about the Find X8 is that Oppo has taken a leaf out of OnePlus phones to offer a physical slider on the left side at the top. Users can easily switch between ring, vibration and silent modes.

The company has incorporated a lot of protective features so the device can serve the owner for several years.

The Find X8 features Corning's Gorilla Glass 7i on both the front and the back sides. Also, it comes with IP68+IP69 rating. It can survive water splashes and also a dip in the swimming pool for up to 1.5 metres for close to 30 minutes.

Further, Oppo offers a free silicone cover case with the retail box. It is soft and can help the device survive accidental drops on hard surfaces.

On the front, the Find X8 comes with 6.59-inch AMOLED (2760x1256p). It supports 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, up to 4500 nits brightness and a pixel density of 460 ppi (pixels per inch).

It is one of the best displays on a phone I have reviewed over the year. It is great for watching movies and vlogs in all light conditions. If you happen to subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or any premium OTT platform, the device's display can support peak brightness up to 4,500nits for HDR content.

The device also comes with an infrared sensor (to control IoT devices at home), dual nano SIMs, a type-C port and an in-display fingerprint. The latter works smoothly, as long as the finger is clean and dry.

Performance

The device runs a 3nm class MediaTek Dimensity 9400 octa-core processor with Immortalis-G925 GPU, Android 15-based ColorOS 15 and 12GB / 16GB LPDDR5X RAM with 256GB / 512GB UFS 4.0 storage.

The new MediaTek processor offers 35 per cent and 40 per cent improvements in terms of faster and CPU efficiency performance over the predecessor. The new Immortalis-G925 GPU integrated with chipset also promises 41 per cent and 44 per cent improvements in terms of faster and GPU efficiency.

Further, the devices come packed with a bigger graphite substrate and vapour cooling chamber for efficient heat dissipation, to keep the phone cool and stable when it is pushed to the limits, particularly when playing graphics-rich games.

Our review unit is a 16GB + 512GB storage variant. It worked amazingly smoothly without any pressing issues to complain about. The apps load faster, and I was able to switch between multiple apps without any lag-ness.

Also, while playing games indoors, the device never overheated as such. When playing outdoors under the sun, it did get a bit warm at the back near the camera module, but it never got out of comfort level. All phones made of glass and metal exhibit such behaviour.

If you are using the cover case at the back, you barely notice heating as such.

The user interface is neat, but the device comes with a whole lot of third-party apps. But, with such a big storage option, there is enough to store thousands of photos and videos and install hundreds of apps without any anxiety of running out of storage any time soon.

Those who haven't previously owned Oppo devices, need a few hours to get the hang of the UI and operate it.

And, the company has confirmed that the device will receive at least four years of Android updates (up to 2028) and an additional year of security software up to 2029.

This means users need not have to buy a new phone every two or three years unless he/she physically damage the phone.

It also supports the Tap to Share feature, where users can even send photos and files instantly to iPhones. But, the latter has to have the O+ Connect app installed for this feature to work without any issues.

Oppo's new phone supports several generative Artificial Intelligence features in Notes, Documents, and AI Recording Summary. They are powered by Google's Gemini Pro 1.5 multimodal AI Large Language Model.

The AI Recording summary feature will come in handy for people like us journalists and corporates, who have to sit through the audio clips of long interviews or an office meeting to transcribe for a story or meeting summary. It takes a few seconds to dish out key pointers and help us complete the work in less time than ever before.

There are AI assistant features in the Notes app to help get a summary of large documents as well. And, it can even help with polishing the story in terms of sentence structure and correcting the grammar mistakes

Further, the Google Gemini AI app comes preinstalled on the phone. Users can converse with the AI app naturally like two people speaking with each other. It can offer not just regular news, sports updates, food recipes, and weather reports, but also offer suggestions on birthday party themes for your kid. It can even recommend tips on what to take for a family trip this winter season and more.

As far as the battery life is concerned, it can easily last one and a half days under normal usage. The battery is made of new-generation silicon-carbon anode technology, which significantly increases the energy-carrying capacity of the battery.

It houses a 5,630 mAh battery and supports 80W wired charging speed and 50W wireless charging. It can fully charge the device from zero to 100 per cent mark in around 30 minutes.

Photography

The standard Oppo Find X8 features Hasselblad triple-camera system-50MP camera (with 1/1.56-inch Sony LYT-700 sensor, f/1.6, OIS: Optical Image Stabilisation, 10-bit HDR) + 50MP 120-degree ultra-wide camera (with Samsung S5KJN5 sensor, f/2.0 ) + 50MP (with 1/1.95-inch Sony LYT-600 sensor, 3X periscope telephoto camera, ƒ/2.6, OIS, up to 120X digital zoom) with LED.

It takes amazing photos in all light conditions. The pictures come with lively colours.

The subjects particularly flowers come off more vibrant than what they appear to our eyes. I won't complain as they are beautiful and worthy to be shared on social media apps.

At night too, it captures brilliant sharp photos. As you can see the colourful fountains and neon lights in the background look sharp and don't blow out.

It supports up to 6X optical zoom, which promises high-quality photos. Even with hybrid digital zoom up to 30X, the photos appear sharp. But, the photos will begin to turn grainy after 50X zoom. It can zoom up to 120X.

With Portrait mode, the Oppo phone does a fantastic job blurring the background and get the sharp photos of the subject to deliver a perfect bokeh effect.

It also boasts AI Reflection remover, which can remove reflections in photos taken from the other side of a glass window. This feature comes in handy while taking pictures of the sky or a landscape through the window of the aeroplane.

With the AI Unblur feature, the phone can sharpen an image. It can be used on photos which were captured with shaky hands. We may not have noticed during the photo session, but when settled at home and looking through photo albums and find such images with blurry faces, the AI Unblur can fix such photos.

Like the Object Eraser on Google's Pixel phones, Oppo also offers a similar AI Eraser on the Find X8. It can easily remove any unwanted objects or persons from the photo.

On the front, it features a feature-rich 32MP front camera with a Sony IMX615 sensor (f/2.4). It takes amazing selfies in all light conditions.

It offers superficial tools to adjust skin texture, shape of the cheeks, eyes, chin, eye size, and even hairline to make the face more pretty. They work amazingly well.

Both the front and back cameras can record videos up to 4K quality at 30/60 frames per second (fps). The video quality is really good. Even with shaky hands, the videos appear stable. This is a good option for users who do vlogging for their YouTube channel.

Final thoughts

Oppo Find X8 is an impressive premium Android phone. It excels in premium build quality, vibrant display, amazing photography tools and long battery life. Also, the gen AI features make the device versatile and make up for a compelling reason to buy it.
