Last weekend, Oppo launched the new flagship Find X9. It comes with big upgrades over the predecessor.

Design, build quality and display

Oppo's latest flagship, Find X9, comes in an all-new design language.

Compared to the Find X8 series, which had a massive circular camera deco, the successor flaunts a curved square camera module with quad sensors and LED flash with Hasselblad branding at the top left corner.

The device flaunts smooth aluminium flat rails around the edges, and the back panel features smooth frosted glass texture with matte finish, offering good grip for the fingers to hold on to the phone.

It measures 7.99mm in thickness, 73.9mm wide, 157mm tall and weighs 203g.

Our review unit is space black. It looks lovely in the sunlight, and thanks to the matte finish, it does a fine job of repelling the sweat-induced fingerprint smudges on the back. Oppo also offers the device in a titanium grey variant.

The Find X9 is one of the most durable phones from the house of Oppo. The screen is safeguarded by Corning's Gorilla Glass 7i shield, and the device comes with the IP66+IP68+IP69 water-and-dust resistant rating, meaning the device can survive a fall in the swimming pool or any fresh water body up to 1.5 metres (around five feet) for close to 30 minutes.

Also, it can even survive a hot (up to 80-degree) water jet of around 80-100 bar pressure.

Additionally, the company pre-fits another layer of screen guard and offers a free cover case, which safeguards phone's glass-like back panel from cracking. Even if the device falls on the house floor with the display down, it is unlikely to shatter thanks thick raised lip around the edge.

However, there is no guarantee of protection if it suffers a hard fall on a sharp , uneven surface like rocks on the beach or on the pot hole-laced roads of Bengaluru.

One new thing you notice in the Oppo Find X9 is the Snap Key on the left side at the top. It is by default programmed to open the AI Mind Space, Oppo's propreitary generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI)-powered assistant feature.

With a short-press, the phone captures the screen content to save or look up on the internet to get more details of a particular object in the screenshot. With a long-press, users can add a voice note to be reminded later.

And, a double-press opens Mind Space to check for older saved screenshots. This feature comes in handy for certain scenarios, where the user comes across an interesting thing on the internet and wants to research it later during free time.

For instance, if a user, while travelling in a mass transit vehicle like a bus or a metro, watches reels and spots a good ad related to a handy home appliance or a gadget or even contact details of a house contractor for roofs, or kitchen reconstruction, they can instantly take a screenshot and add a voice note. So that the user, in his free time at home , can go back to the AI Mind Space page and do more research on the product or contact the person. Previously, those screenshots used to get lost in all the other photos in the album and the user, most often times forgets it.

If you don't like the Mind Space feature, you can reprogram it to perform other functions such as loading your favourite app, torch light, record voice, take a screenshot, switch between ring/vibrate/silent modes, trigger the camera app for a quick photo and more.

At the base, the device features a Type-C USB port, an infrared sensor, stereo speakers, dual-SIM slots (type: nano) and an in-display fingerprint sensor. The latter, by the way, is a 3D Ultrasonic biometric sensor. It works amazingly fast in terms of recognising the fingerprint impression and unlocking the home screen.

On the front, it sports a beautiful 6.59-inch 1.5K (2760 × 1256p) AMOLED display. It supports a variable 120Hz refresh rate, offering up to 3600 nits peak brightness and supporting Dolby Vision.

The display is of high quality and has super thin bezels, measuring just 1.15mm symmetrical on all sides and has a screen-to-body ratio 91 per cent. Be it watching multimedia content on OTT apps, or doom scrolling on social media platforms or reading long-form articles, the Find X9 delivers good on enhanced viewing experience.

With MediaTek's powerful Dimensity 9500 chipset, Arm Mali-G1 Ultra MC12 GPU and Oppo’s chip-level resource management system Trinity Engine, the device delivers smooth performance.

Even when performing heavy-duty tasks, the device does not overheat much. It houses a massive vapour chamber having 32,052.5mm² total dissipation area. It is 21.6% larger than the previous generation. The company says it has combined multiple advanced materials, including a redesigned vapour chamber, high-performance thermal gel, and extensive graphite.

The vapour chamber itself has been completely redesigned with an ultra-fine 0.02mm stainless steel mesh. It not only reduces its thickness but also significantly improves thermal conductivity for more efficient heat dissipation.

With advanced 360-degree surround antenna architecture, it significantly enhances signal stability and anti-interference capability to offer enhanced phone call experience and stable cellular internet connectivity.

The device comes with a massive 7,025mAh battery. With 3rd gen Silicon Carbon battery technology, it is designed to retain up to 80 per cent of its original capacity even after five years of regular use. This ensures the owner doesn't have to replace the battery after two years, which is usually the case for most people.

Under normal usage, it can easily last one and a half days.
