Samsung in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm showcased the company's upcoming XR series mixed reality headgear.
Design, It looks like a cool state-of-the-art Ski goggles, but unlike the Apple Vision Pro model, the Samsung XR seem lighter.
Samsung XR codenamed Moohan, meaning ‘infinity’ in the Korean language, promises to deliver immersive experiences within an infinite space.
“XR has quickly shifted from a distant promise to a tangible reality. We believe it has the potential to unlock new and meaningful ways to interact with the world by truly resonating with your everyday lives, transcending physical boundaries “We are excited to collaborate with Google to reshape the future of XR, taking our first step towards it with Project Moohan,” said Won-Joon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung.
It will run on the Android XR platform and boasts cutting-edge displays, Passthrough capabilities and natural multi-modal input. Initially, it will support Google Maps, YouTube and the Gemini AI app.
It should be noted that Google is working on its own Glasses category device, which also runs on the Android XR platform.
Both devices will support most of the popular Android apps available onthe Google Play Store for Android phones.
"New Android XR platform leverages the power of Gemini by bringing together a conversational user interface (UI) and a contextual understanding of the world around you. It offers cutting-edge capabilities beyond gestures or a controller, utilizing voice and natural conversation to elevate the experience. With these accurate, personalized interactions, the platform will be your helpful AI assistant," the company said.
Samsung has not fully revealed the features of the device, but as per speculated reports on the web, the XR series glass will feature a 12MP Sony camera (with IMX681 CMOS image sensor) and the device will be powered by Qualcomm's first-generation AR1 series silicon, which will also come integrated with NXP semiconductor to Google's Gemini-powered AI features and a 155mAh battery.
With such sophisticated hardware and sensors, the Samsung smart glasses will be able to understand hand gestures to take inputs and users will also be able to make QR-code payments with less hassle.
Besides the Apple Vision Pro, Samsung XR headgear will compete with Meta's augmented reality headsets.
The new Samsung XR series is likely to be showcased during the Galaxy S25 series phone launch event in January and possibly hit stores in the second half of 2025 along with the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 series.
