In 2023, WhatsApp launched new feature that allowed users to share HD quality photos and videos on its messenger app. But, for the receivers, HD multi media content will gobble up their phone's storage.
So, Meta-owned entity is testing a new feature to address the aforementioned issue.
In the latest WhatsApp for Android beta v2.25.12.24, it offering the option to choose the type of quality for downloaded photos and videos, reported WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp community forum.
As you can see the screenshot (below), WhatsApp offers two auto-download options-- SD (Standard) and HD (High Definition). Those who have large enough space in their phone can choose HD. And, those who have very storage space, can pick the SD option.

This will greatly benefit WhatsApp users in India. Most family members and even friends have the habbit of sending good morning and good night messages every day and these get stored in the gallery and eat away the majority of the phone's storage.
On festivals, new year day and birthdays, this actually gets out of control in the subcontinent, which has more than 50 crore active users on WhatsApp. Every new year day, more than 20-25 billion messages gets exchanged or forwarded in India.
With this new feature, people will be able to save up lot of storage space of the phone.
In a related development, WhatsApp last week rolled out several new features including online indicator in group chat. It lets users see how many people are 'Online' in real-time, right under the group name. This will allow users to directly tag them to chat.
