Venugopal to meet party leaders, MLAs in K'taka amid reports of rift between JD(S), Cong

Amid reports that a cabinet expansion or reshuffle is on the cards in a bid to save the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal will hold a series of meetings with party leaders and legislators in the city on Wednesday.

Venugopal, who reached here late Tuesday night, will meet Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, CLP leader and Coordination Committee chief Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and Pradesh Congress chief Dinesh Gundu Rao, sources said.

Venugopal will then hold a meeting with Congress ministers in the coalition government, they said, adding he will also take part in the CLP meeting scheduled in the evening.

Voices of dissent are gaining ground within the Congress in Karnataka as two of its MLAs met former chief minister S M Krishna at his Bengaluru residence on Sunday.

The coalition government in the southern state has been fragile since its inception with reports of its collapse surfacing every then and now.

Venugopal's visit to the city gains significance as the coalition leaders are planing for an expansion or a reshuffle of the Kumaraswamy cabinet, aimed at saving the government.

While, Siddaramaiah on Tuesday had said it would be an expansion to fill three vacant posts, there are also reports quoting top sources in the government that some ministers may be asked to step down to make way for disgruntled legislators.

Out of 34 cabinet ministers, the Congress and the JD(S) have shared 22 and 12, respectively.

Currently, three posts are vacant, two from the JD(S) and one from the Congress.

Even as coalition leaders, including the chief minister, struggled to save the government, ministerial aspirants started lobbying on Tuesday.

Many Congress legislators have expressed strong reservation against priority being given to the disgruntled, sidelining loyalists.

With growing number of aspirants and less posts in hand, it remains to be seen how Venugopal and Congress leaders manage the situation.

In the meeting, Venugopal and the state party leadership may ask few ministers to make way for others, sources said.

However, a section of party leaders believe that a cabinet expansion may be suitable at this moment, as any attempt for reshuffle may further worsen the situation.

After LS poll rout, cabinet reposes faith in Kumaraswamy

A day after suffering a rout in the Lok Sabha elections, the Karnataka cabinet Friday reposed its 'faith and confidence' in the leadership of chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, asserting the Congress-JD(S) coalition would continue.

Briefing reporters after an informal cabinet meeting convened to take stock of the dismal show of the coalition partners, deputy chief minister G Parameshwara said the mandate on Thursday was for the government at the Centre and not for the state.

Accusing the opposition BJP of trying to destabilise the government, Parameshwara said the ruling coalition would not allow them to succeed.

"... we have reposed our faith and confidence in the leadership of chief minister Kumaraswamy. This is the decision taken by all the ministers today," said Parameshwara.

Asserting that all their MLAs were with them, he said the coalition would continue under Kumaraswamy's leadership and that there was no threat to the government.

Steamrolling the ruling Congress-JD(S) alliance, the BJP Thursday had scored a resounding win bagging 25 out of the total 28 Lok Sabha seats in an outcome that left the one-year-old Kumaraswamy government in a tizzy over its stability.

With the BJP dealing a hammer blow, the Congress and JD(S)managed to win only one seat each, indicating that neither arithmetic nor chemistry worked for the two which apparently has failed to reconcile with each other at the ground level.

This is said to be the worst-ever performance by the Congress in the state as against a record of sorts by the BJP.

Karnataka emerged as the bright spot for the saffron party in the South with other neighbouring states bucking the "Modi magic".

Mallikarjun Kharge suffers first electoral defeat in his career Bengaluru

In a huge setback to the Congress, veteran party leader Mallikarjun Kharge was defeated by BJP's Umesh Jadhav in Gulbarga by a margin of 95,452 votes on Thursday. Popularly known as "solillada Saradara", (a leader without defeat), this was the first electoral loss in Kharge's political life spanning several decades.

While Jadhav secured 6,20,192 votes, Kharge got 5,24,740 votes, according to the Election Commission.

Ahead of the polls, Jadhav had quit as Congress MLA and joined the BJP to contest the Lok Sabha election from Gulbarga.

Jadhav was among the four MLAs against whom Congress had moved the Assembly Speaker for disqualification under the anti-defection law.

Following Jadhav's resignation as MLA, the Congress had petitioned the Speaker not to accept his resignation as disqualification was pending against him.

BJP appeared headed for a spectacular win in Karnataka as it bagged 11 seats and was leading in 14 others, leaving the ruling Congress-JD(S) alliance in a tizzy over the stability of its one-year-old government.

Reflecting the coalition's plight, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge in Gulbarga and former Prime Minister and JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda in Tumkur were trailing their BJP rivals, Election Commission trends showed.

With the BJP dealing a hammer blow, Congress and JD(S) managed to win only one seat each, indicating that neither arithmetic nor chemistry worked for the two, which apparently failed to reconcile with each other at the ground level.

Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh, supported by the BJP, was leading by 1,26,436 votes in Mandya in a fiercely fought battle against Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil.

87-year old Gowda was trailing by a margin of 12,387 votes in Tumkur against BJP's G S Basavaraj. Gowda's another grandson Prajwal Revanna,son of minister H D Revanna defeated A Manju of the BJP by 1,41,324 votes in Hassan.

Gowda had shifted to Tumkur from his traditional bastion Hassan to make way for his grandson. Kharge, a veteran Congressman, who has never tasted electoral defeat, was trailing by 95,168 votes against BJP's Umesh Jadhav, who resigned as MLA and joined the saffron party ahead of the elections. Senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily faced defeat against BJP candidate B N Bache Gowda in Chikkaballapur by 1,82,110 votes.

Seven time MP from Kolar K H Muniyappa was trailing against BJP candidate by a margin of 2,09,707 votes. Union minister D V Sadananda Gowda (Bangalore North) was leading against his Congress rival by a huge margin, his colleagues Ramesh Jigajinagi (Bijapur) and Anant Kumar Hegde (Uttara Kannada) won their respective seats by a margin of 2,58,038 and 4,79,649 votes, respectively.

Other BJP candidates who won are Devendrappa(Bellary), Bhagwanth Khuba (Bidar), Nalin Kumar Kateel(Dakshina Kannada), Pralhad Joshi (Dharwad),C S Udasi (Haveri), Karadi Snaganna (Koppal). State BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa's son B Y Raghavendra (Shimoga) also won in Shimoga defeating his nearest rival Congress' Madhu Bangarappa by a huge margin of 2,33,360 votes.

Among leading BJP candidates are Annasaheb Jolle (Chikkodi),Tejavi Surya (Bangalore South), A Narayanaswamy (Chitradurga), G M Siddeshwar (Davangere), P C Mohan (Bangalore Central), Prathap Simha (Mysore), Muniswamy (Kolar), Gaddigoudar Parvatagouda Chandanagouda (Bagalkot) and Suresh Angadi (Belgaum).

The Lok Sabha poll outcome is widely expected to have a bearing on the stability of the one-year-old H D Kumaraswamy government, which has been bogged down by inner contradictions within the coalition, keeping the state in political turmoil.

The coalition government is also living in constant fear of losing the support of its MLAs, against BJP's alleged bid to topple the government. BJP has been claiming that 20 MLAs within the ruling coalition were ready to jump ship post the Lok Sabha poll outcome, which has put the government on the edge and made it struggle to keep its flock in tact. Under the seat sharing arrangement,Congress had contested in 20 constituencies and JDS in seven.

Calling the Lok Sabha election results "unexpected", Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said leaders of his party JD(S) and Congress would deliberate on the reasons behind the defeat in the election. Kumaraswamy conceded defeat and said he respected the mandate of the people. "Leaders of both parties of coalition will hold a discussion about the loss of JDS-Congress coalition candidates.

"Our party has seen many victories & losses over the years and party workers need not lose heart on this loss. Let us strive to strengthen the party in the days ahead," the Chief Minister tweeted. He congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for emerging victorious for the second time saying that he respected the mandate of the people.

BJP leader R Ashoka demanded the resignation of CM H D Kumaraswamy

Soon after the trends indicated a massive victory for BJP candidates in Karnataka, BJP leader R Ashoka demanded the resignation of chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, here on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons, he said that the people of Karnataka have given their mandate. "Kumaraswamy should not continue as CM for even a single minute. He should go to Raj Bhavan and submit his resignation immediately," he said.

He cited former CM Ramakrishna Hegde as an example, who had submitted his resignation as CM following his party's dismal performance in Lok Sabha polls in 1984.

EC officials turn harsh against journalists in Chikkodi

Election commission turnsharsh against journalists in Chikkodi Parliamentary Constituency. Even as the counting process began at 8 am, journalists have been denied entry into counting centre.

Police created inconvenience to journalists not allowing them to enter counting centre despite possessing identity cards issued by EC. Irony is that even information officer too was not let in.

After taking objection senior police officials allowed the media. However, media crew was for a shocker as Returning Officer Dr Rajendra K V denied permission for the journalist into counting centre.

This triggered a flash protest from the journalist who protested in front of media center located beside the entry gate. Subsequently, Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Reddy rushed to the spot. Tried to pacify the protesting journalist. Reddy later said he had interacted with the Returning Officer, assured the journalist of entry into the counting centre.
